OGUNQUIT - Marvin M. Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Ogunquit, Maine, formerly of Cranston, R.I., a retired executive, died June 3, 2004 at the Fall River home of his son, Robert Smith. His son also maintains a home in Cranston, R.I.

He was the husband of Marcia (Brooks) Smith. Born in Boston, a son of the late Jacob and Mae (Weiner) Smith, he had lived in Cranston, R.I. for many years before moving permanently to his summer home in Ogunquit, and his winter home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

He had been CEO of the former Kelly's Sporting Goods Inc., which he founded for 40 years, retiring in 1995, and also retained ownership of the real estate complex on Sockanossett Crossroads.

He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific aboard the USS Cepheis as a seaman first class, and was involved in the invasion of Okinawa.

He enjoyed four very happy years working at Harbor Candy in Ogunquit.

He was a member of Temple Beth-El in Fall River, Mass., and Congregation ETZ Chaim, Biddeford.

He was a member of Mount Hope Lodge of the Masons, Fall River, Mass., and the York Lodge of Elks.

He was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Fall River, Mass., and a member of the Cape Neddick Country Club.

He supported and sponsored several religious, community and youth leagues throughout the state of Rhode Island. He was also a supporter of the West Kennebunk Animal Shelter and the Perkins Cove Rotary Park.

Besides his wife and son Robert, he leaves another son, Joel Smith of La Jolla, Calif.; one brother, Arthur Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

He was the twin brother of the late Barbara Stearns.

A private burial was held Friday in Beth-El Cemetery, Fall River. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ogunquit.
